The Top Level

The Top Level is Job Pointer's main screen view, what you see after you start JP. From here you can go to one of the databases to start your job hunt or get more stuff to help with your job search.

Double clicking on one of the database titles or its description will open that database and change the view to the Database Level. Two of the items at the Top Level, Help Wanted and My Stuff, are categories. Double clicking them reveals their items but you stay at the Top Level instead of changing views.

You can always get back to the Top Level by clicking the Jump Up button in the toolbar until you return to this view.

Databases

Big Dogs
The biggest job search engines and employment databases on the planet -- and the wannabes, too -- are linked from this database. These job sites have job listings to jobs anywhere and everywhere.

The 250-plus bookmarks in Big Dogs are always available to all users, including those using Job Pointer the free puppy.

Search Where
This database contains bookmarks for search forms and job pages where you can find jobs in specific locations. It includes job search engines and employment databases for all 50 states in the US, all the provinces and territories in Canada, as well as many other countries around the world.

There are over 1200 bookmarks in Search Where that can be seen by all users, including those using Job Pointer the free puppy. But they can only be used by people who register their Pointer.

Hunt What
If you are looking for work in a specific field or performing a specific job function this is what you want. These bookmarks link you to search forms and job pages in fields ranging from Accounting to Zoology. Hunt What also has many links to sites for those with special work interests, such as alternatives to the 9 to 5 routine, telecommuting jobs, people with disabilities, minorities and women.

With more than 1100 specialized job search forms, pages and sites, Hunt What can be seen by everybody but only used by folks who buy Job Pointer.

Job.News
This database contains URLs to job-related Usenet newsgroups (the internet's first virtual community). There are literally hundreds of job openings posted on Usenet daily.

Another database that anyone can see but you can only use if you buy the full-grown Pointer. Job.News has links to more than 400 job, career and resume posting newsgroups, as well as bookmarks for newsgroup archives and search engines on the web.

NOTE: Not all users can receive all newsgroups. This is dependent on your access provider's newsfeed. If there is a group you have to read, call your ISP and tell them how important it is because, after all, you're looking for a new job.

Career Esources
Career resource centers, guides and advice givers, decision-making tools, resume services, job fairs and career development resources are some of the more than 750 bookmarks that make up the Career Esources database. Free for everyone to use.

Treats
The links in the Treats database take you to a special section at the Job Pointer web site where you can check out the day's employment news headlines and feature articles from career sites around the world. In the future, you'll be able to get job search tips, read a work-related joke or two and maybe even see a job-related cartoon. Free for all.

Help Wanted
Double click Help Wanted to reveal two more databases, Jobs @ Employers and Recruiters & Agencies.

The two databases in Help Wanted are ones that you need to register your Pointer to use. Everybody can see them, of course.

Jobs @ Employers
Bookmarks for thousands of employers' job search forms or employment category pages at their own web sites or their job listings pages at the big job search sites. These do not link to the companies' home pages -- they go to their jobs pages. Jobs@Employers has over 16,000 bookmarks.

Recruiters & Agencies
This database lists recruiters, executive search firms and employment agencies who will make you the target instead of the hunter. Recruiters & Agencies is organized by specialty and contains more than 1000 bookmarks.

My Stuff

Double click My Stuff to reveal two handy tools.

Hot Dogs
Hot Dogs is the place to keep your favorite bookmarks. You can add a bookmark from any Job Pointer database into Hot Dogs so you can get back to the site quickly without having to open the database and navigate to the bookmark. You can also grab the URL from your browser and add it as a bookmark. Use an existing folder or make a new one to hold your Hot Dogs.

Boneyard
The Boneyard is a history of all the sites you have hunted with Job Pointer, organized by week and day. If you can't remember where that bookmark was or forgot to add it to Hot Dogs, you can still figure out where you were.
